Friends of Fiber Art International
GRANT GUIDELINES & APPLICATION.
PURPOSE OF FRIENDS OF FIBER ART INTERNATIONAL:
To increase appreciation and understanding of contemporary art in
fibrous materials, Friends of Fiber Art International will:
• Disseminate information about and encourage collection of contemporary
fiber art;
• Support museum shows of fiber art through direct funding and
maintenance of the Registry of Contemporary Fiber Art Collections;
• Encourage scholarship and critical writing about art constructed in
fibrous materials;
• Stimulate fiber art exhibition in galleries; and
• Educate collectors and potential collectors through seminars, tours
and visits to fiber art collections.
In essence, the Friends organization believes that the best gift one can
give a fiber artist is a fiber collector.
Friends of Fiber Art International was founded in 1991. At the end of
the tenth year of operation the organization had more than 800 members
in 46 of the United States and 17 other countries.
While it is not a requirement, applicants are encouraged to become
members of Friends of Fiber Art International. Consider becoming an
upper-level member. Friends is a federally-recognized 501 (c) (3)
not-for-profit corporation. Contributors' dues are deductible from
income tax to the extent allowed by law. Upper-level dues provide most
of the grant funds.
HOW TO APPLY: Requests for funding must be on the three-page form that
follows. Copies of the form are acceptable. The Board members review the
applications and usually make selections during a telephone conference
call. Applicants are encouraged to be concise in composing the
information. Board review of supplementary materials is time consuming.
It is better to make your most-salient points in the main application.
If supplementary materials are sent, they will be distributed to the
decision-making Board if nine copies, collated and punched for
three-ring binder, are submitted. Materials submitted cannot be
returned. Mail your application to: Grants Chairman, Friends of Fiber
Art International, Post Office Box 468, Western Springs, IL 60558.
ELIGIBLE PROJECTS: Projects which address the Friends of Fiber Art
International mission as stated above in "Purpose" are eligible for
grant support. The Board of Directors makes the awards.
In the past, Board members have favored giving support to highly-visible
projects that will impact a large audience thereby raising the public's
appreciation of fiber art -such as exhibitions of contemporary fiber art
that were chosen by professional curators, documented by catalogs, and
travelled to at least two cities
While the Board expects to continue such support, it is receptive to new
ways in which it may fulfill Friends' mission.
NOT FUNDED: Historical or ethnic textile projects
How-to workshops or technique demonstrations
Children's programs
Exhibitions in which the curator is also an exhibitor
Friends of Fiber Art International has prepared a list of museum
curators who are interested in art in alternative media. They may agree
to curate or jury your show. To request a copy of the curator list, send
a SASE to the above address.
Purchase of art work
Endowment
Annual operating expenses
Equipment purchase and construction
Overhead
Fringe benefits
Customarily grants are not made in direct response to applications from
individuals.
FUNDS AVAILABLE: Each year since it's founding, Friends has given
approximately five grants in partial support of contemporary fiber art
projects. Up to now, Friends grants have been modest, between $250 and
$5000 per grant. In the final quarter of the fiscal year (ends July 31),
a total grant pool is identified and allocated. By 1998 Friends of Fiber
Art International had awarded a total of more than $100,000. The process
continues and the total of awards grows.
DEADLINE: Applications on the three-page form that follows must be
submitted by July 1.
NOTIFICATION OF RECEIPT OF APPLICATION: Applicants who require
confirmation of receipt should include a self-addressed post card for
that purpose.
NOTIFICATION OF AWARDS: The Board members review and decide on awards.
Notification will be made as promptly as possible after the grant
meeting and no later than October 1.

ART JEWELRY FORUM 2007 JEWELRY GRANT
PROCESS
For Exhibitions and/or Catalogs for Contemporary Art Jewelry
BACKGROUND
The Art Jewelry Forum is a non-profit organization designed to nurture
the field of contemporary art jewelry, by promoting education,
appreciation, and support for contemporary art jewelry.
GOALS:
1. Garner the support of dedicated collectors and the attention of
curators and writers to promote this art form.
2. Provide acknowledgment and financial support to those artists
entering the field.
3. Seek out and support efforts to bring jewelry artists and other
experts in front of groups to talk about their work and the field.
4. Provide financial support for exhibitions/publications that will
expose art jewelry to a broad audience.
5. Present opportunities for members to build their personal knowledge,
understanding and appreciation of art jewelry.
The Art Jewelry Forum believes that its grant program fulfills its goal
to expose art jewelry to a broader audience.
ANNUAL GRANTS
AJF is still a fairly new organization and thus has limited resources
for grants in any one year. Although more than one grant may be made
within a calendar year, no more than $2,000 will be awarded annually.
Grants will range from $500 to $1,500. AJF recognizes that this means
applicants will need to seek additional funding elsewhere to cover the
total costs of proposed project.
CRITERIA
Exhibitions, catalog publications, and related programming must be
focused on contemporary art jewelry. We define “art jewelry” as objects
made for wear or adornment by an individual studio artist (or artist
collaborative) working within the field of metalsmithing and applied
arts.
Exhibitions, catalogs, and programming may include a historical
component or have a thematic approach—such as a review or comparison
with major stylistic movements—but the emphasis must be on the work of a
contemporary jeweler(s). One person exhibitions and monographs will be
considered, as well as survey shows and accompanying catalogs that
feature works by several artists.
AJF does not fund research and development, including study trips and
travel to conferences.
ELIGIBILITY
Museums, universities, other non-profit exhibition spaces and other
organizations that are tax-exempt under Section 501-C-3 of the Internal
Revenue Code may apply to support exhibitions originating within the
United States that are scheduled to open prior to 2010. AJF will
consider on a case-to-case basis: A) organizations that do not have
current 501-C-3 status but are partnering with a tax-exempt or
non-profit institution; B) for-profit spaces that are organizing
educational programs that further the mission of AJF.
Individual artists, independent curators, writers and decorative arts
scholars whose projects are not affiliated with appropriate tax-exempt
institutions, exhibitions originating outside the United States, and
exhibitions scheduled later than 2007 will not be considered in this
grant cycle. In addition, previous awardees must wait 2 years before
they are again eligible for a grant.
CREDIT
The Art Jewelry Forum should be given sponsorship credit for helping to
fund the exhibition or catalog whenever the project is mentioned in
either written or electronic documentation, or during oral
presentations.
REVIEW CRITERIA
AJF requests an accounting of how the grant monies were utilized. Upon
completion of the project, any written or digital materials—such as, but
not limited to, the exhibition catalog, promotional materials, and CDs
or DVDs—should be submitted to AJF. These materials should be
accompanied by a brief one to two pages description of how the AJF Grant
was used to bring the project to fruition.
APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS
Applicants should submit a detailed CV that includes a publication and
exhibition history, along with a Prospectus that outlines the project
and includes a preliminary budget. Other support materials may be
submitted as deemed appropriate.
REQUIREMENTS REGARDING VISUAL AIDS
Five to ten slides that represent work to be included in the proposed
exhibition or catalog should be submitted with the written materials.
Applicant may also include short videotapes or digital media that
provide the background and/or context of the project. All visual
materials should be clearly labeled, and an SASE should be included for
return of the materials.
DEADLINE DATE
Applications for this cycle must be received no later than October 30,
2007. Notification of applicants will occur no later than December 15,
2007.
