The
Craft Organization Development Association (CODA) serves
organizations with education and professional development to foster
public appreciation and understanding of craft.
Host State:
The state of Kentucky brings unique qualifications as the 2005 CODA
Conference host. Kentucky’s public
and private craft programming has been recognized nationally and modeled
often. Several new projects
implemented in Kentucky over the past few years have built on past
successes and promoted further
collaboration. Kentucky has also shown a long-term leadership commitment
to CODA and its work to
develop craft organizations.
Conference activities will take place in the city of Berea and on the
campus of Berea College, and the City
of Hindman and the campus of the Knott County Branch of Hazard Community
and Technical College.
Conference attendees will enjoy a variety of regional fare, craft
demonstrations, and performances by local
talent.

Thursday, June 2

Pre-Conference Self-Guided Tours
Conference attendees arriving on Thursday may want to visit attractions
in Louisville or Berea including a
variety of art centers, studios and galleries. Many direct flights are
routed through Louisville, home of the
Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft, Glassworks, the Mellwood Arts and
Entertainment Center, and more.
Those flying into Lexington may enjoy sites during the short drive to
Berea, which has been designated as
the Folk Arts and Crafts Capital of Kentucky and boasts the Kentucky
Artisan Center, Berea College Crafts,
Churchill Weavers and numerous artists studios, galleries, and shops.
Other arts attractions are located in
the state and region such the Museum of the American Quilter’s Society
in Paducah, The Kentucky Folk Art
Center in Morehead, and Bybee Pottery in Waco. Check the CODA web site

●Community Development – “Crafts Work for Communities”
A discussion showcasing several successful projects in Louisville,
Paducah, and Berea, three Kentucky cities
that have successfully developed arts districts through a variety of
partnerships. Panelists: Mark Barone,
City of Paducah Artist Relocation Program Coordinator; Ken vonRoenn,
Jr., President Architectural Glass Art,
Inc./Glassworks Developer; Scooter Davidson, Leasing Agent/Retail
Specialist, Mellwood Arts and Entertainment

●Tourism
– “What Tourists Need from You”
This panel will focus on how today’s craft organizations can best
develop and market programs and
services to tourists. The presentation will include a national overview
and discussion of tourism issues that
have impacted several craft projects. Panelists: Carole Summers,
Director of Tourism, Handmade in America;
Cheryl Moorhead Stone, Executive Director, Eastern Kentucky University’s
Center for Economic Development,
Entrepreneurship, and Technology; Chris Cathers, Director, Kentucky
Artisan Heritage Trails; and Judy
Sizemore, Outreach Coordinator, Kentucky Arts Council.
●The
Business of Art – “New Issues Affecting Today’s Working Artisan”
This panel will look at issues impacting craft producers such as
technology, product development, socioeconomic
trends, and the global economy. The session will include a discussion of
challenges and
opportunities for organizations and communities that support artists in
their business endeavors. Panelists:
