Celebrates 20th Annual Leadership Conference
The 20th Annual CODA Leadership Conference held in Savannah, hosted by Georgia Made Georgia Grown and Savannah College of Art & Design (SCAD) brought together leaders from as far away as Canada and Hawaii as well as all regions of the United States. Highlights included the pre-conference tour of SCAD fiber, furniture, and jewelry departments showing state-of-the-art technology SCAD students are able to take advantage of, along with the works of art they create. There were great sessions on how to be more effective with email marketing with tips from Constant Contact representative and Janell Anderson-Ehrke giving tips on how they have become more efficient using various social media to promote Grow Nebraska.
The Annual CODA Membership Meeting was well attended. CODA extended a big thank you to three long-t
ime board members, Cheryl Hartley, with Tamarack: The Best of West Virginia; Mary Lacer, with the American Association of Woodturners and Steve Loar with the Center for Turning and Furniture Design at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Three new board members were welcomed, Tom McFall, Executive Director of the Alberta Crafts Council; Tiffany DeEtte Shafto, President of Hawaii Craftsmen and Vice President of the Hawaii Wood Guild; and Carol Ross, Craft Consultant with George Little Management and Handmade at NY International Gift Fair, a returning board member who was instrumental in CODA’s development into a professional nonprofit organization and conducting The CODA Survey: The Impact of Crafts on the National Economy. Current Board members include Managing Director - Linda Van Trump and Jan Katz with the Center of Southern Craft & Design, Ogden Museum of Southern Art, as well as the new Executive Committee members in the picture, left to right:
Treasurer - Tracy Michaud Stutzman, Ph.D., Maine Crafts Association, Dover-Foxcroft, ME
Co-Chair - Carolyn Patterson, Illinois State Museum Artisans Program, Springfield, IL
Co-Chair - Nancy O’Meara – Philadelphia Museum of Art, Craft Show, Philadelphia, PA

Another highlight was the 20th Anniversary Celebration and CODA award presentation. Andrew Glasgow, former Executive Director of the American Craft Council and the Furniture Society and past CODA board member, was recognized for his leadership, creative thinking, and outstanding service to the field of craft by the Craft Organization Development Association Board of Directors in a room full of his peers from across the US and Canada at the Jepson Center of the Telfair Museums. Andrew’s heartfelt speech touched many as he continues to inspire with his enduring spirit. (click here for more info)
The Peer group sessions are always a favorite, this year a new partnership was initiated between the Ontario Crafts Council in Toronto and the Center for Southern Craft and Design at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art in New Orleans, LA. Overall, the power of creating connections between like organizations is a key strength of the annual conference. Attendees come away with new ideas, new action plans, and new connections that further develop the field of craft across the US and Canada.
